Boys Varsity Wrestling · Twarog and Gasic: Champions at Solon Comet Classic and Lead Bears to 9th Place at Solon Comet Classic

Chasing titles has become a mainstay for wrestlers Paul Twarog and Lazar Gasic.  While both have stood atop podiums in local tournament competition, capturing a major tournament title has proven to be elusive.

That changed on Saturday, December 1st when the 152 lb and 220 lb wrestlers respectively climbed to the top tier of the podium at Solon.

Both wrestlers had captured gold in local events, making their names known area wide, but some of the larger tournaments, packed with talent from around the state hold more clout and garner more recognition.  Winning a major title, out of the gate, such as the 34th Annual Solon Comet Classic, reveals the talent embodied of these young wrestlers making their mark in regional, and potentially state standings.

Dominic Mudry finished in 5th place in the 113 lb weight class.  Matt Casey finished in 8th place in the 170 lb weight class.  The Varsity Wrestling Team finished in 9th place out of 27 teams scoring 93 points.

Lazar Gasic works for a turn using a half nelson against his Oregon-Clay Opponent in the semifinal round. Lazar would win the match 8-1 and go on to take first place in the tournament at 220lb; winning his final bout 1-0 against Eddie Sevastos of Brunswick.

Paul Twarog captures both legs of his Medina Highland opponent on route to an 11-7 semifinal win. In a rematch from last season, Paul would face the returning State Qualifier Brady Linder and avenge the former loss. This is a rivalry likely to be repeated in the coming months as the season progresses. Twarog went on to capture First Place in the Solon Comet Classic at 152lbs defeating Dakota Ryan of Lake Catholic 6-2.

Freshman standout Dominic Mudry gets set to explode out from the defensive referees position in his bout against Parker Fredrick of Anthony Wayne HS. Dominic impressed teammates and fans by winning successive championship round matches; advancing to the semifinals. Dominic would place 5th overall at 113lbs.

Matthew Casey looks to bury his opponent with a head-and-arm pancake, working for the fall against Milan Jackson of Lakewood. The 6-3 wrestle-back victory earned Casey a spot on the podium at 170lbs. Matt went on to take 8th Place.
