Boys Varsity Swimming, Girls Varsity Swimming · Bears take the 5th at Suburban League Championship Meet – Keep Eyes On The Prize

The North Royalton High School Boys and Girls Swim Teams wrapped up the holiday break by each taking fifth place at the Suburban League Championship Meet, held January 5th at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium.

Senior captain, and Ohio State recruit Sarah Turchanik earned the Bears’ lone conference championship in the 100 yard backstroke.

The meet represented the unofficial halfway point of the season, and concluded a grueling stretch of training.  It also gave Head Coach Mike Milliken a chance to evaluate where his team stands.  “The team performed well. There were a lot of season best times and even some lifetime best times. That is encouraging coming out of the tough training over winter break,” said the fifth year head coach.  Milliken added, “the meet was a good reminder of just how competitive the Suburban League is in swimming. Teams like Stow, Wadsworth, and Twinsburg have more year-round swimmers every season, which is really elevating them in the conference.”

In addition to Turchanik’s performance in the 100 backstroke, some of the more impressive swims were turned in by Alex Gata (200 Freestyle), Connor McCann (100 Breastsroke) and Brandt Dougherty, who had a massive time drop in the 500 Freestyle of more than 20 seconds.  On the girls’ side, Mallory Hlavaty (100 Butterfly), Christina Husar (100 Freestyle) and Taylor Klaiber (500 Freestyle) dropped significant time while establishing personal bests in their respective events.

The road does not get any easier this weekend, as the Bears will compete in the multi-location Northeast Classic, which draws top teams from all over the state.  Preliminary round will be at the University of Akron on Saturday AM, with finals at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton Saturday evening.

While these mid-season tests are important, Coach Milliken’s eyes never stray very far from the bigger prize.  “As always, our focus remains on the end of the season and performing our best in the state tournament.”

Go Bears!
