On Thursday April 11th, the Boys Freshman Baseball Team hosted undefeated Nordonia. The Freshman team had won their last two games and they were ready to take on a very good Nordonia team. The Bears jumped out to an early lead and held on to a 11 to 8 victory over the Knights.
Nordonia took an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of first, with a walk, sacrifice bunt, a hit batter and an error. But the Bears came back strong in the bottom of the first and scored five runs batting through the whole lineup. Vince Koprowski led off the inning, reaching first on error and proceeded to steal second base. Andrew Kortan walked and Jake Keitlen singled bringing home Koprowski. Jacob Lipchek singled and brought home Kortan and Keitlen. Lipchek moved up to third on error by the center fielder. Ben Pacholski grounded out to short scoring Lipcheck. Thomas Cooney walked and then stole second base. Joseph Schmidt singled to right, scoring Cooney from second. Bears lead 5 to 2 after the first inning.
Nordonia get another run in the top of the second on four walks. But the Bears hot bats continued in the bottom of the second scoring another five runs and batting through the whole lineup again. Koprowski led off with walk and stole second. Kortan doubled to left center and scored Koprowski. Keitlen singled and scored Kortan then stole second base and got to third base on a wild pitch. David Hicks grounded out to second scoring Keitlen. Pacholski got hit by a pitch and Cooney reached first on an error by the third baseman with Pacholski going to third. Cooney stole second. Schmidt singled to left, scoring Pacholski and Cooney. The Bears now led 10 to 3 after the second inning.
Keitlen went 2 for 2 and Schmidt went 2 for 3 to lead the Bears offense. Schmidt also lead the team with three RBIs.
Matt Abbott started the game for the Bears. He allowed four runs on four hits, five strikeouts and five walks over three innings and took the win. Tyler Collaros pitched the next three innings allowing three runs on four hits, four strikeouts and seven walks. Alex Trivonovich pitched the seventh inning allowing one run on two hits, one strikeout and one walk to get the save.
The Boys Freshmen Baseball Team record is now at 4 win and 3 loss. Come cheer them on as they host a doubleheader with Brunswick High School on Saturday, April 13th with first game starting at 11:00 AM. GO BEARS!!
