On Saturday, April 13th, the Boys Freshmen Baseball Team hosted Brunswick High School for a doubleheader on a sunny, but cool and windy day. In game two, the Bears lost the lead late in a 5-3 defeat to Brunswick.
The Bears took the lead early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alex Trivonovich singled and then stole second. Jake Keitlen singled to bring in Trivonovich to score. Keitlen stole second and scored on a single by David Hicks.
Brunswick came back with a run in the top of the third and had a chance to score another run. Keitlen fielded a single to right field, threw to his cut off Trivonovich, who then threw home. Joseph Schmidt made the tag at home for the second out.
The Bears scored another run in the bottom of the third. After two outs, Matt Abbott walked. Abbott was attempting to steal second when Schmidt singled to right field advancing Abbott to third base. Schmidt then stole second and Andrew Kortan singled to score Abbott from third and Schmidt to advance to third. Kortan stole second base, but the Bears could not bring in any more runs. The Bears led the game 3-1.
The Bears had another great defensive play when Kortan caught a fly ball to left and threw home to Schmidt who applied the tag on the third base runner. The Bears had another chance to score some runs when they had bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the fifth. Jacob Lipchek, David Hicks and Matt Abbott all walked. Brunswick brought in a new pitcher and the Bears could not score a run.
The game came down to seventh inning. With three straight walks, a fielding error and a single, Brunswick scored four runs to take the lead 5-3 and hold on for the win.
Thomas Cooney pitched the first three innings giving up one run, two hits, three strikeouts and four walks. Billy LoBello pitched the next three innings, allowing no runs and only three hits. Alex Trivonovich started the seventh inning allowing four runs on one hit and four walks. Vince Koprowski relieved Trivonovich and struck out the last batter for the final out.
