On Saturday, April 10th, the Girls Varsity Softball Team hosted Elyria High School. On a day so nice they played twice, the Bears swept a double header versus the Pioneers, 4 to 0 and 10 to 0.
In game 1 it was all about the pitching. Senior pitcher Paige Heffke was nearly perfect on the day facing just one over the minimum. She gave up a single up the middle in the 2nd inning, and that was it. On the day Heffke pitched 7 shutout innings. She allowed just the one hit, no walks, matched her season high with 14K’s and faced just 22 batters in the 7 innings picking up her 4th win of the season.
Offensively for the Bears, they scored 3 runs in the first on a bases clearing error by the Elyria left fielder. The Bears loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by sophomore Mia Maddamma, and walks to Heffke, and senior Emma Kelley. It looked like they may be stranded until the 2 out miscue cleared the the bases for the Bears.
The only other run to score came on a blast by senior Emma Kelley who cracked a solo HR over the CF wall in the bottom of the 3rd inning. It was more than enough for Heffke as she made it stand the rest of the way.
The Bears were led in hitting by Maddamma who had 2 hits and a run scored in the game. Paige Heffke, Emma Kelley, senior Shannon O’Malley, sophomore Bella Weatherbie and freshmen Ashley Butler accounted for the other hits on the day.
In Game 2 the offense came alive as the Bears knocked Elyria pitchers around for 13 hits in a 10-0, 5 inning run rule victory.
Senior Jillian Baracz got the start and threw 5 shutout innings. She scattered 5 hits, and no walks to go along with 5 K’s on the day as she picked up her 3rd win on the season.
Sophomore Mia Maddamma continued her torrid day at the plate as she collected 3 more hits in the game as she went 3-3 with 3 runs scored. Paige Heffke followed right behind collecting 3 more hits in the game including 2 doubles, an RBI, and 2 runs scored. Also collecting multiple hits were Emma Kelley with a double and a single, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and senior Shannon O’Malley with pair of hits as well to go along with an RBI and a run scored.
Rounding out the day on offense, junior Julya Dillon had an RBI single as well as sophomore Elizabeth White. Senior Peyton Maciak ended the game early for the Bears as her triple in the bottom of the 5th knocked in 2 runs giving the bears the 10-0 victory in game 2.
With the 2 wins on Saturday, the Girls Varsity Softball Team record is now at 7 wins and 2 losses with a 4 win and 1 loss conference record. The Bears begin a tough week of conference play with games against Wadsworth on Monday, April 12th, at Brecksville on Wednesday, April 14th, and back at home on Friday, April 16th against Nordonia. GO BEARS!!
